Working Abroad Can Boost Employability

As we count down to De BuitenlandBeurs, a careers fair in Utrecht later this month, I was left thinking just how rewarding working overseas can be – personally, professionally and often financially too.

Working overseas may take you out of your comfort zone but you’ll also be exposed to different cultures, languages, opinions and practices. You’ll learn far more than you would if you stayed put.

I wrote about this topic recently for a recruitment industry publication, and thought it apt to sum up here.

Increased exposure to new cultures: You’ll not only experience a new way of living, but also new ways of thinking. Working alongside people from different cultures and with different skillsets or ways of doing things can help you develop the way in which you work, and boost your own professional skillset.

Develop your language skills: Should you move to a country with a language different to your own, you’ll have a great opportunity to pick up some language skills while being immersed in a new culture, which makes learning a lot easier. Doing so will likely expand your knowledge of your first language too.

Boost your employability: These points mentioned above mean more skills and experiences on your CV and therefore likely greater employability for you in the long run.

It would be wrong to say working overseas will all be smooth sailing. It’s likely at some point you will face challenges that push you out of your comfort zone. Those challenges, however, are there to be overcome and the benefits should hugely outweigh any downsides.
